I guess you can call us an ordinary family, the average 2.4 children. There are only 16 months between my two children and things at first were really difficult, I suffered from PND with my second child and it took roughly 2 years to fully recover.

Raising a child with Down's Syndrome Print E-mail

Our fourth child, Johanna, was born in March 2000. I was almost 45, so I knew I had a significant risk of having a child with Down's Syndrome. I'm a natural pessimist so I waited anxiously for the midwife to pronounce that she was "OK". Everything seemed to be normal, so I breathed a sigh of relief.

It wasn't until next day, after the doctor's round, that we were told they thought Johanna had Down's Syndrome.

Can you describe what it is like becoming a grandparent?

I had mixed feelings when our son and his wife, Tim and Claire, announced that they were expecting their first child. I had always very much looked forward to grandchildren, having greatly enjoyed being a mum, but was worried on two counts.
