Kemi's Journal by Abidemi Sanusi |
|
|
What was your first impression?
Published by Scripture Union, this is a girlie book, a kind of Christian
Bridget Jones if your imagination can stretch that far. The title is Kemi's
Journal of life, love and everything and is aimed at a predominantly female,
young audience. It tackles some big themes head on and does so in a way that is
easily readable.
What's it about?
Kemi is a twenty-something Londoner, passionate about Jesus, in love with her
boyfriend from life BC (before church) and trying and sometimes failing to get
her life on track. Written in diary form, this book is endearingly written,
sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, often anxious and always about Kemi trying
to be a ‘better Christian.'
What did you like about it?
I liked the way the main character isn't a perfect Christian with everything
sorted. She struggles and she makes some of the same errors of judgment we all
do. The diary format made it easy reading, sometimes too easy as it could be
hard to put down. I liked the Bible verses for each day in her diary and they
were often so pertinent to her situation. I liked the chatty style.
What didn't you like?
I did feel that some of the other characters were a little like caricatures,
rather than more real, believable people, but that didn't take much away from
my enjoyment of the book.
What will you still remember a year from now?
I will remember the strong feminine style of this book which is so different
from such a lot of Christian fiction.
Who would you recommend this book to?
I would recommend this book to girls from the age of about fifteen to thirty
five, either single or married. I was encourages that this age and stage of
Christian women was being catered for in fiction.
Can you give us a couple of good quotes from the book?
Vanessa. I really don't know how or why God put us together as friends because
I really don't understand our relationship. Seems like I shall have to drop
going to church completely. I don't think I could bear being with Vanessa and
having all those people coming to congratulate her after the service on her
choice of a godly husband ~ and wondering why I missed out so spectacularly!
'Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship
the Father in spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the
Father seeks. (John 4:23)' These daily verses. There are days when they're my lifeline
and I drink them in like water in the desert and there are days when I can
barely stand to read them because I am afraid of what I'll find. Today is one of those second sorts of days. Fake
worshippers. Yep, I'm one of them.
