What was your
first impression?
To
be honest, shock and disbelief! This is the most bizarre, interesting and
mind-blowing book I've ever read.
What's it
about?
It is an autobiography of a lady who
struggled with multiple personality disorder, with not just one other
personality, but 109 different characters, each created to protect Carolyn's
memory from the horrors she suffered as a young child as a result of satanic
ritual abuse. She didn't go into too many graphic details of the abuse, which
was a relief, but focussed on the long battle of ‘getting free', including how
she had to leave her children for 3 years, so she could get better.
What did you
like about it?
I liked that I learnt about a side of the human psyche
that I didn't know about before. I liked that Carolyn ultimately ‘got free' not
by noisy and scary deliverance sessions, but by submitting to God and resisting
the devil, with the help of a course called ‘Freedom in Christ' and through the
support of faithful men and women of God. I also liked the fact that those
people who ultimately helped Carolyn were ordinary, ‘normal' people who loved
God and were obedient.
What didn't you
like?
Nothing - it was well written, easy to read (despite
the subject matter) and extremely compelling.
What will you
still remember a year from now?
The way that God was able to work in the life of
someone who seemed beyond help. It really reminded me that even though there
will be some people we meet who seem to be ‘unreachable', God is more than able
to meet their needs, provide miracles and set free those who choose to submit
to Him.
Who would you
recommend this book to?
Those who are feeling beyond God's help; those who are
feeling discouraged because they haven't seen a breakthrough with those who
they work with; and anyone who enjoys reading and wants to read a powerful and
moving book!
Can you give us a couple of good quotes from the book?
""Nothing" came to speak with Christopher in therapy a few days later and
we learned of her story. She revealed that I was eight years old when she came
and was created to keep me out of the way and out of sight. I felt of no
account, of no importance, a non-person. I could be made use of by others
because it didn't matter what happened to me. I was a nobody, nothing. Another
lie was revealed and embodied; another battle to fight in my mind. I didn't
matter, not to anybody. I would never matter."
"Because
of the DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and the demonic issues, she had
never really been in control of her own mind. Because she had been a victim and
learned at an early age that it was useless to struggle, she could tend just to
give in and agree with the enemy when he came knocking with his accusations and
lies. However, she really worked at renewing her mind, which meant committing
herself with grim determination to believe what God's word says even when it
didn't feel true. She learned to realize that not every thought in her mind was
necessarily her own and that the question to ask was not so much where it came
from but whether it was true. She learned to hold her thoughts up to the truth
in God's word and throw out those that did not agree with it."
