Beneath the Cassock by Joy Carroll Print E-mail
What was your first impression?
My first impression was that it looked like an easy read and I was quickly
drawn in and wanted to learn more about this rebellious teenager who entered
the ministry and the woman on whom 'The Vicar of Dibley' was based.

What's it about?
It is about Joy Carroll's life and ultimate calling to serve God as an Anglican
Minister. This was before women were actually allowed to be ordained.

What did you like about it?
I liked the honesty with which it was written, I also found Joy's relationship
with God and ultimate calling very moving. Her relationship with God was so
real, even as she was growing up and rebellious.
I was nervous before I read the book that there may be lots of "celebrity" in
it but that wasn't the case. It really was one woman's journey in faith. Joy is
a truly inspirational woman with a real desire to see social justice; she is
prepared to get her hands dirty to reach out to people. There is real beauty in
the way God has used this woman to enrich the lives of others.

What didn't you like?
I really can't think of anything I didnt like about it.

What will you still remember a year from now?
A year from now I will remember her courage, standing up for her beliefs even
in the face of adversity. I will remember her standing up for those that as a society we often
forget.
I will also never forget the story she details about her Mother-in-law's death
in "leaving". I wept and could feel God's grace in the situation.

Who would you recommend this book to?
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to walk with a woman on
her journey through faith, also any fans of the Vicar of Dibley.

Can you give us a couple of good quotes from the book?
"God made man and woman in God's image. Whether it's football or leadership in
the church, we should give our young women and daughters every chance to be the
best that
they can be. Anything less mars the image of God in humanity."

"We all witnessed the grace of God that week: the paschal mystery of life and
death, literally side by side. I had never experienced a more vivid
illustration of death and resurrection bound together by the love of family and
the love of God. This hope of life in the midst of death is what Christian
faith is all about"
