What was your first impression?
This is the book that I’ve been waiting for, a life line.
What's it about?
It’s a daily devotional book. Each page is dated, and starts with a
title and a Bible verse. The rest of the page is a reflection on that
verse. It’s designed for those like me who are not good at finding time
to study the Bible, but who want to learn, be encouraged, spiritually
fed etc. It takes just a couple of minutes so if you’re really tired
(who isn’t?!) there’s still time to read it before falling asleep.
Sometimes I ponder what’s been said for longer, other times I read it
and go straight to sleep.
What did you like about it?
I’ve been facing some really tough issues in recent times, and felt at
the end of my tether. From day one of reading this book (I started
reading part way through November) I found that every verse and comment
seemed specifically written for me. I found so much comfort and
encouragement from that. I felt as though God wrote this book for me.
It seemed to give me what I needed when I needed it! And as things have
gradually improved and things don’t feel quite so terrible, so the
message still seems to fit the bill! How does God do that?
What didn't you like?
Nothing at all. How could I not like the fact that this book reminds me
daily that the God of the Universe cares for lil’ ol’ me?
What will you still remember a year from now?
That to be in touch with God on a daily basis, even if only for a short time, can change lives. It’s helped me change mine.
Who would you recommend this book to?
Do you feel you’re so busy with the children and running the house that
you just don’t have time to read the Bible? Then I thoroughly recommend
this book to YOU!
Can you give us a couple of good quotes from the book?
From the introduction:
“My purpose in writing this book is to help you focus on God at the end
of your busy days. In the quiet solitude of the night He will refresh
and restore you, lead you in paths of righteousness (see Psalm 23:3),
and teach you how to enjoy every day of your life.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the
bread of (anxious) toil – for He gives (blessings) to His beloved in
sleep. Psalm 127:2”
From November 24th, titled ‘Trust the Unchanging Rock.’
‘Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever Hebrews 13:8’.
Feelings are emotions that are always changing, so you cannot depend on
them. As a follower of Christ, you must learn to live by truth and
wisdom, not by feelings and emotions.
1 Corinthians 10:4 refers to Jesus as the Rock. An important part of
His nature is His emotional maturity, which includes unchanging
stability. During His time on earth, Jesus did not allow himself to be
led around by His emotions. He was led by the Spirit even though He was
subject to all the same feelings we experience in our daily lives.
Jesus was always the same.
And He still is the same…and will be forever. You can safely put your
trust in Him tonight, knowing He will not change, but will help you
develop the same kind of emotional maturity and stability that marked
His own life.”
